WHAT DO THE WATERPROOF RATINGS MEAN WHEN IT COMES TO RAINWEAR?

WHAT DO THE WATERPROOF RATINGS MEAN WHEN IT COMES TO RAINWEAR?

The waterproof rating given to fabric relates to how much water said fabric can handle before it starts to feel wet beneath it, essentially meaning it is ‘leaking’. Fabric is tested beneath a column of water, with more and more being added until it starts to filter through.

A jacket with a 5000mm rating means that 5 metres of water was ‘poured’ on the garment before it started to soak through; whereas a 10,000mm (or 10k) rating means the jacket could handle 10 metres of water before any adverse effects were felt.

Obviously, the longer you are out in the rain and the heavier the downpour is, the more chance you have of eventually feeling wet!  Another factor is whether the garment has been seam-sealed too. For more info on the ratings, read below!

But first, what does Seam-Sealed mean?

When a garment is sewn, tiny holes are created where the stitching is, and this is where rain will find its way in. Seam-sealing is a process done to heat seal any seams and stitching, to ensure water doesn’t get through. It is worth noting that not all our garments are seam-sealed - but we will state when they are!

10,000mm - 15,000mm Rating

With this rating you can get caught out in a downpour but remain dry! If you want this sort of protection, look to the Billie which has a heavier-weight TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) fabric and is perfect for those sudden heavy downpours!

Note – While the Billie isn’t seam-sealed, the zipper is concealed and the
jacket has been designed in such a way that you’d need to be out for an
extended period of time before you got wet!

10,000mm Rating

Jackets and coats with this rating provide great coverage when you’re out in the rain – though you’d want to avoid being out in a heavy downpour for a prolonged amount of time. The Georgie is our most popular style in this category, with the Alex coming in a close second!

Both are seam-sealed, lightweight, packable options.

5000mm Rating

These jackets are great to have on hand if you get caught out in a light shower or that annoying misty drizzle! Our Kimbo jacket is a great example with its 5000mm Waterproof Rating, as well as having the added feature of seam-sealing.
